How to Unlock a PDF (Remove the Password)

If you have a PDF that asks for a password every time you open it — and you know the password — you can remove the password for good. This is useful for files you access constantly, like a frequently referenced manual or your own archived documents.

To be clear, this is not about breaking into files you are not authorized to read. Unlocking only works when you can already open the document, it simply strips the encryption so future opens are instant.

To unlock a PDF with PdfWill: open the Unlock PDF tool, upload the file, enter its current password, and download the unprotected copy. The decryption runs entirely in your browser, so the file and password never reach a server.

If you later need to secure it again — say, before emailing it — the protect tool adds a fresh password with strong AES-256 encryption.
